Drug Abuse and Its Effects

The use of drugs by both the young and the old in Nigeria has become a major concern to all and sundry. Many of them now take drugs under one guise or the other. Such drugs include cocaine, heroine, indian hemp,Tramadol e.t.c. This dangerous trend has to be urgently looked into so that our youths who are leaders of tomorrow will be able to take their rightful place in the society. To prevent the total degeneration of the country’s values, culture and ideals, a positive and urgent step has to be taken to nip drug abuse in the bud.

Drug abuse is the use of drugs which have not been prescribed by a medical practitioner or misuse of those prescribed, e.g. overdose. The ignorance of many youths makes them use drugs for their daily social, educational, sporting and political activities.

Some students depend so much on taking drugs to enable them to read and study for examinations. What is the effect of this? These students get into the examination halls and break down as a result of the drugs they have taken. They are therefore not able to perform well. Eventually, they are not able to cope in school and they become dropouts.

In the social arena, many artists are guilty of drug abuse. Some of them take drugs to enhance their performances on stage.

Some sports men and women too are not left out  of drug abuse. They take performance enhancing drugs. This makes them have an undue advantage over other competitors.

One of the effects of the drug abuse is that some youths now dress carelessly, they misbehave and engage in many unprofitable activities. They thus become a menace to society.

Many of these youths no longer uphold the cherished societal values. In order to curb drug abuse, people have to be educated on the dangers of taking drugs that are not prescribed by medical practitioners.
