Oral : Word syllables - SS1 English Lesson Note
Words of four syllables, stressed on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd syllables
Usually words are divided into syllables. A syllable is a unit of pronunciation consisting of a single vowel sound, which may or may not be surrounded by consonants. The stress of a word is the emphasis placed on a particular syllable.
Words of four syllables can be stressed on the first, second, or third syllable. The stress of a word can affect its meaning and pronunciation. For example, the word "congratulate" is stressed on the first syllable when it means "to express happiness or praise for someone's success." However, the same word is stressed on the third syllable when it means "to give someone a gift or award."
An example :
First syllable: comfortable, memorable, important.
Second syllable: communication, education, information.
Third syllable: congratulations, opportunity, responsibility.
