General Introduction of Vowels and consonants sounds - SS1 English Lesson Note

1. Define vowel sounds ? Vowel sounds are a type of speech sound that is produced with an open vocal tract, allowing air to flow freely through the mouth. They are characterized by a relatively unobstructed airflow and a lack of constriction in the mouth or throat.

2. Give examples of vowel sounds ? There are five basic vowel sounds in English: A, E, I, O, and U. However, these can be pronounced in different ways depending on factors such as stress, accent, and regional dialects. In addition, there are also diphthongs, which are a combination of two vowel sounds pronounced together as a single syllable.

3. Define consonant sounds?  A consonant sound is a speech sound that is produced by some kind of obstruction of the airstream in the vocal tract. This obstruction can be created by the lips, tongue, teeth, or throat. Consonants are contrasted with vowels, which are produced with a free flow of air.

Articulate both monophthongs and diphthongs of english? Vowel sounds are speech sounds which are produced without any obstruction of the flow of breath. They are voiced. In the English language, there are 20 vowel sounds; these are grouped into two namely: monophthongs and diphthongs.

There are 12 monophthongs, they’re  pronounced and identified as They are:

1.     /I :/   field, sea, feet, key, peak.

2.   /I/     sit, busy, will, lid, pick.

3.  /e/      set, bet, well, bury, many.

4.  /æ/       sack, bad, hat, plant.

5.    /a: /     heart, laugh, cart.

6.   /ᴐ/      cock, frog, clock, pot.

7.  /ᴐ:/     port, cork, board, door.

8. /ʊ/     put, wood, good, book.

9. /u: /     two, fool, blue, pool.

10.  /ʌ/    cup, some, won, mother.

11.  /ʒ: /   worm, bird, girl, nurse.

12.   /ə/ colour, sister, pastor, again.

There are 8 diphthongs in the English language. Teacher pronounces examples of diphthongs and how  to identify and pronounce them. The diphthongs are:

13. /eI/      day, way, again, chalet.

14. /əu/     no, home, boat.

15.  /aI/    buy, eye, fine.

16.  /au/    fowl, cow, house.

17.  /ᴐI/    joy, toy, voice.

18. /Iə/    idea, ear, where.

19.  /eə/     pair, air, where.

20.  /uə/      poor, tour, cure.
