People’s Democratic Party (PDP) - SS3 Government Lesson Note
The People's Democratic Party (PDP) is a political party in Nigeria that was formed in 1998. It emerged after a group of politicians who were dissatisfied with the military government's transition program to civilian rule decided to form a new political party.
The PDP was initially made up of politicians from different parts of the country and was seen as a party that could unite Nigeria's diverse ethnic and religious groups. The party's founding members included former military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba.
The party's first major success came in 1999 when it won the presidential election, and Olusegun Obasanjo became Nigeria's president. The PDP also won a majority of seats in the National Assembly and most state governorships. This gave the party significant control over Nigeria's political landscape.
Under the PDP's rule, Nigeria experienced both progress and setbacks. On the positive side, the country's economy grew, and democratic institutions were strengthened. However, there were also allegations of corruption and abuse of power, leading to calls for change.
The PDP remained in power for 16 years until the 2015 elections when the party was defeated by the All Progressives Congress (APC). Since then, the PDP has undergone various changes, including leadership changes and efforts to reposition itself as a viable opposition party.
