What is a phrasal verb?

A phrasal verb is a combination of a verb and a preposition or adverb that together have a meaning that is different from the meaning of the verb and the preposition or adverb used separately.

For example, the phrasal verb "turn up" means "arrive" or "increase in volume". The verb "turn" and the preposition "up" have different meanings when used separately, but when used together, they have a new meaning.

How to use phrasal verbs

The meaning of a phrasal verb can be learned from context. For example, if you see the sentence "He turned up late for the meeting", you can infer that the meaning of "turn up" is "arrive late".
