Plot summary - SS2 Literature Lesson Note
The play opens with Iago plotting to destroy Othello. He is motivated by a combination of factors, including his jealousy of Othello's success, his resentment at being passed over for promotion, and his desire for revenge against Desdemona, who he believes has rejected his sexual advances.
Iago's plan is to convince Othello that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio, Othello's lieutenant. He does this by planting evidence, such as a handkerchief that Desdemona has lost, and by manipulating Othello's insecurities.
Othello becomes increasingly jealous and suspicious, and he eventually kills Desdemona in a fit of rage. When he learns the truth about Iago's treachery, he kills himself.
