Pre-planting and planting operations - SS1 Agriculture Lesson Note
1. Land Preparation:
Before planting pulses, the land needs to be well-prepared. This includes plowing, harrowing, and leveling the field to create a suitable seedbed.
Weed control measures, such as plowing under weed residues or using herbicides, are essential to reduce weed competition.
2. Seed Selection and Treatment:
High-quality seeds should be selected, free from diseases and pests. These can be treated with fungicides and insecticides to ensure healthy plant establishment.
Seeds should be appropriately spaced and sown at the recommended depth for each crop. Groundnut, for instance, is typically planted 5-8 cm deep.
3. Planting Time:
Planting time varies depending on the local climate. Groundnut and cowpea are warm-season crops, so they are generally sown in the spring or early summer when the soil temperature has warmed up.
