Pre-Planting and Planting Operations - SS1 Agriculture Lesson Note

Land Preparation: Clear the field of weeds, debris, and any crop residues. Properly plow and harrow the soil to break it up and create a suitable seedbed.

  • Seed Selection: Choose high-quality cotton seeds that are well-suited to your region and purpose. Consider factors such as fiber length and quality, pest resistance, and adaptability to local climate.

  • Seedbed Preparation: Create a well-drained seedbed with fine soil texture. Ensure that the soil is free from clods and compaction, which can hinder root growth.

  • Planting: Cotton is typically planted in rows. The spacing and depth of planting can vary depending on local conditions and cotton varieties but generally, seeds are sown at a depth of 1 to 1.5 inches and spaced 6 to 12 inches apart within rows.

  • Irrigation: Adequate moisture is crucial for germination. Depending on rainfall patterns, irrigation may be necessary until seedlings establish.

  • Thinning: After seedlings emerge and develop true leaves, thinning may be required to achieve the desired plant density, typically leaving one healthy plant per spacing interval.
