Pregnancy (conception) - JSS1 Basic science Lesson Note
Pregnancy, or conception, typically begins when a sperm fertilizes an egg, leading to the formation of a zygote. Signs of pregnancy often include missed periods, nausea, fatigue, breast tenderness, and frequent urination. Hormonal changes can also cause mood swings and food cravings.
During pregnancy, the fetus goes through three main stages of growth: the germinal stage (weeks 1-2), the embryonic stage (weeks 3-8), and the fetal stage (week 9 until birth). In the germinal stage, the zygote implants itself into the uterine wall. The embryonic stage sees the development of major organs and structures, such as the heart, brain, and limbs. Finally, during the fetal stage, the fetus continues to grow and mature, with organs becoming more specialized and functional until birth. Throughout pregnancy, regular prenatal care is crucial to monitor both the mother's and the fetus's health.
