Procedure for Voting - JSS2 Civic education Lesson Note
- Voter Registration: Before an election, eligible citizens must register to vote, either through online platforms, government offices, or designated registration centers. Registration deadlines and requirements vary by jurisdiction.
- Polling Station: On Election Day, voters report to designated polling stations or voting centers to cast their ballots. Polling locations are typically assigned based on residential address and are equipped with ballot boxes, voting booths, and election officials.
- Verification: Upon arrival at the polling station, voters may be required to present identification documents to verify their identity and eligibility to vote. This helps prevent fraud and ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
- Ballot Casting: Voters receive a ballot paper listing the candidates or options for the election. They then proceed to a voting booth to mark their choices in secret. Depending on the voting system, voters may select one candidate or rank candidates in order of preference.
- Ballot Counting: After polls close, election officials tally the votes cast at each polling station and compile the results. Transparency measures, such as observers and scrutineers, may be employed to verify the accuracy and fairness of the counting process.
- Announcement of Results: Once all votes have been counted and verified, electoral authorities announce the official results of the election. Winning candidates are declared, and elected officials assume their roles in government.
