Reasons for change from assimilation to association - SS2 Government Lesson Note
The policy of assimilation was met with resistance and criticism as it led to the loss of cultural identity and traditions of the colonized peoples. As a result, colonial powers began to shift towards a policy of association, which aimed to recognize and preserve the cultural differences and traditions of the colonized peoples.
This change was also motivated by the increasing awareness of human rights and the growing pressure from international organizations to respect the rights of all peoples, including those in colonies. Additionally, the policy of association allowed for greater political and social participation of the colonized peoples, leading to more peaceful and stable societies in the long run.
