Reasons for the success of indirect rule in northern Nigeria. - SS2 Government Lesson Note

Indirect rule was successful in northern Nigeria for several reasons:

·         Pre-existing political structures: Northern Nigeria had a long history of centralized political authority, with powerful emirs and sultans who exercised control over their subjects. Indirect rule built upon these existing structures, allowing colonial administrators to delegate power to traditional rulers.

• ·         Limited resources: The British colonial administration in Nigeria was understaffed and lacked the resources to directly govern the vast and diverse northern region. Indirect rule allowed them to govern indirectly through traditional rulers, thereby reducing the burden on the colonial government.
• ·         Cultural sensitivity: Indirect rule allowed traditional values and customs to be respected and preserved, as it involved the use of local leaders and institutions. This helped to maintain the authority of traditional rulers and prevented significant disruptions to the social order.
• ·         Cheap and efficient: Indirect rule was less expensive and more efficient than direct rule, which required the colonial government to establish new administrative structures and institutions. By relying on existing power structures and traditional leaders, indirect rule was able to minimize costs and maximize efficiency.
