Revision on vowel sounds - JSS2 English language Lesson Note

What are vowels?

Vowels are speech sounds created without any blockage of air in the mouth. They are the building blocks that form the core of syllables in spoken language.

Types of Vowels:

In English, vowels can be classified into two main categories:

1. Monophthongs (Pure Vowels):These are single vowel sounds produced by holding your mouth in one position throughout.
Short vowels: Pronounced quickly, like the "a" in "cat" or the "i" in "pin".
Long vowels: Sustained sounds, like the "a" in "cake" or the "e" in "meet".

Diphthongs:
A combination of two vowel sounds pronounced together in one syllable, like the "oi" in "join" or the "ou" in "shout".
