Simplifying Algebraic Expressions - JSS1 Mathematics Lesson Note

To simplify an algebraic expression, we combine like terms (terms with the same variables raised to the same power) and perform arithmetic operations.

Example:

3π‘₯+4π‘₯βˆ’2

Combine the like terms

3π‘₯ and 4π‘₯: (3+4)π‘₯βˆ’2=7π‘₯βˆ’2

Thus, the simplified form of the expression is

7π‘₯βˆ’2

Another Example:

5π‘Ž+3π‘βˆ’2π‘Ž+4βˆ’π‘

Combine the like terms:

(5π‘Žβˆ’2π‘Ž)+(3π‘βˆ’π‘)+4=3π‘Ž+2𝑏+4

So, the simplified form is

3π‘Ž+2𝑏+4
