System Software - JSS2 Computer Studies Lesson Note

System software is a subset of software designed to manage and control the computer hardware, providing a platform for application software to run. It plays a foundational role in ensuring that the computer functions smoothly. System software is essential for the proper operation of the computer and includes components such as the operating system, device drivers, and utility programs.

Types of System Software:

1.  Operating System (OS): The operating system is the core component of system software. It acts as an interface between the user and the computer hardware, managing resources such as memory, processing units, and input/output devices. Examples of operating systems include Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. Microsoft Windows, in particular, is a widely used operating system known for its user-friendly interface and broad compatibility.

Device Drivers: Device drivers are specialized programs that facilitate communication between the operating system and specific hardware devices. They ensure that the hardware components, such as printers, graphics cards, and network adapters, can function correctly with the operating system.

Utility Programs: Utility programs are tools designed to perform specific tasks that enhance system performance, security, and maintenance. Examples include antivirus software, disk cleanup tools, and backup utilities. These programs contribute to the overall stability and efficiency of the computer system.
