The basic skills and techniques in shot put - JSS1 Physical and Health Education Lesson Note
1. Grip and Stance: Athletes must learn the right shot, grip and throwing stance. They should firmly grab the shot put with their fingertips and press it against their neck or chin. For balance, keep the feet shoulder-width apart and extend the non-throwing arm forward. 2. Power position: Athletes must learn how to get into the power position by bending the knees, lowering the hips, and rotating the body sideways with the throwing arm back. This position allows the athlete to build force and momentum for the throw. 3. Release technique: For the shot put, athletes must practice the right release technique. This involves pushing off the back foot, rotating the hips, and extending the arm to release the shot put at the right angle and height for maximum distance. 4. Strength and speed: Shot put demands both strength and speed. Athletes must build upper-body strength, particularly in the shoulders, arms, and chest, in order to generate throw force. They also need to improve their speed and explosiveness in order to throw the shot put with force. 5. Balance and coordination Shot put athletes need to have good balance and coordination to maintain their form throughout the throwing motion. They should practice drills and exercises that help improve their balance and coordination, such as standing on one leg or performing agility ladder drills.
