concord identification - SS3 English Lesson Note
Subject-verb agreement: The verb in a sentence must agree with the subject of the sentence in number (singular or plural). For example, the sentence "The boys and girls are playing in the park" is correct because the verb "are" agrees with the plural subject "boys and girls."
Pronoun-antecedent agreement:The pronoun in a sentence must agree with its antecedent in number (singular or plural). For example, the sentence "The woman and child are going to the park" is correct because the pronoun "they" agrees with its antecedent "woman and child."
Compound subjects: When a sentence has a compound subject, the verb must agree with the most important noun in the subject. For example, the sentence "The team of players are playing well" is correct because the verb "are" agrees with the noun "players," which is the most important noun in the subject.
Collective nouns: Collective nouns can be singular or plural, depending on the context. For example, the sentence "The jury is deliberating" is correct because the collective noun "jury" is singular in this context. However, the sentence "The team of players are playing well" is also correct because the collective noun "team" is plural in this context.
