Types of Environmental Pollution - JSS2 Physical and health education Lesson Note
Environmental pollution is the contamination of the natural environment, which causes adverse changes. Here are the main types:
Air Pollution
Sources: Emissions from vehicles, factories, and burning of fossil fuels.
Effects: Respiratory problems, global warming, acid rain, and smog.
Water Pollution
Sources: Industrial waste, sewage, oil spills, and agricultural runoff.
Effects: Contaminated drinking water, destruction of aquatic ecosystems, and health hazards for humans and animals.
Soil Pollution
Sources: Use of pesticides and fertilizers, industrial waste, and deforestation.
Effects: Loss of soil fertility, contamination of food crops, and health risks from consuming polluted produce.
Noise Pollution
Sources: Traffic, industrial activities, construction, and loud music.
Effects: Hearing loss, stress, sleep disturbances, and wildlife disruption.
Light Pollution
Sources: Excessive or misdirected artificial light from streetlights, buildings, and billboards.
Effects: Disruption of ecosystems, interference with astronomical observations, and health problems like sleep disorders.
Radioactive Pollution
Sources: Nuclear power plants, improper disposal of radioactive waste, and accidents like Chernobyl.
Effects: Cancer, genetic mutations, and environmental contamination for thousands of years.
Thermal Pollution
Sources: Industrial processes and power plants discharging hot water or chemicals into water bodies.
Effects: Disruption of aquatic life, reduced oxygen levels in water, and alteration of ecosystems.
