Types of ICT - SS1 ICT Lesson Note

There are several types of ICT that facilitate different modes of communication. Each type of ICT serves specific communication needs and has contributed to the globalization and interconnectedness of our world.

Types of ICT (Information and Communication Technology):

Broadcasting:

Broadcasting involves the transmission of audio or video content to a wide audience. This can include radio and television broadcasts. ICT has significantly expanded broadcasting capabilities through digital platforms, allowing for more efficient and widespread distribution of content.

Telecommunications:

Telecommunications refers to the transmission of information over long distances using various technologies. This involves the transmission of information over long distances. It includes various technologies like telephones, cellular networks, and more recently, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). This includes telephone systems, mobile networks, and internet communication. Telecommunications technologies have evolved to include voice, data, and multimedia transmission, enabling real-time communication across the globe.

Data Networks:

Data networks are the backbone of modern communication, connecting devices and systems to enable the exchange of data. Data networks enable seamless sharing of information, resources, and services among interconnected devices. Data networks facilitate the exchange of digital information between computers and devices. This includes local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and the internet.

Information Systems:

Information systems encompass the software, hardware, data, processes, and people that work together to manage and process information within an organization. These are integrated systems that manage and process information. They include databases, software applications, and hardware infrastructure that support data storage, retrieval, and manipulation. These systems can range from simple databases to complex enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. Information systems are crucial for decision-making, data analysis, and overall business operations.

Satellite Communications:

Satellite communications involve the use of satellites to transmit signals over long distances. This technology is particularly valuable for global communication and broadcasting, as it enables coverage in remote areas and across oceans. Satellite communications support various services, including television broadcasting, internet connectivity, and navigation systems. This involves transmitting signals to and from satellites in orbit to facilitate long-distance communication. It's widely used for broadcasting, navigation (e.g., GPS), and remote sensing.
