Types of Traditional Farming Methods - JSS3 Agricultural Science Lesson Note
1. Subsistence Farming: This is a self-sufficient farming practice where farmers grow crops and raise animals primarily to meet the needs of their own families. The focus is on producing enough for personal consumption with little surplus for sale.
2. Shifting Agriculture: Also known as slash-and-burn farming, this method involves clearing land by cutting and burning vegetation. Farmers then cultivate the cleared area until fertility declines, at which point they move to a new plot.
3. Nomadic Herding: Common in pastoral societies, nomadic herding involves the constant movement of livestock in search of grazing land. This method is adapted to arid and semi-arid regions where fixed agriculture may be challenging.
