Understanding Data in Computer Science - JSS1 Computer Sudies Lesson Note
In computer science, data refers to pieces of information that computers use to perform tasks. It can be numbers, words, pictures, or anything else that can be stored and processed by a computer. Data is like the building blocks that computers use to create useful information.
Types of Data
There are two main types of data:
1. Numeric Data: This type includes numbers and can be used for calculations. For example, your age, the temperature outside, or the number of likes on a social media post.
2. Text Data: This type includes words and sentences. It's what we read and write, like the words in a story, the text in a message, or the name of a song.
Everyday Sources of Data
1. Smartphones: Your phone collects data about your calls, messages, and the apps you use.
2. Social Media: When you post pictures, like something, or follow someone, data is created.
3. School Records: Your grades, attendance, and the books you borrow from the library are all forms of data.
4. Weather Apps: The temperature, humidity, and forecast are examples of weather data.
5. Fitness Trackers: If you use a fitness tracker, it collects data about your steps, heart rate, and activities.
6. Online Games: When you play games online, data is created about your scores, achievements, and progress.
7. Shopping: When you buy something online or in a store, data is recorded about your purchase.
