Understanding How Appliances Work - JSS1 Basic technology Lesson Note

Each electrical appliance operates based on a specific principle and design:

  • Refrigerators; use a refrigeration cycle involving a refrigerant, compressor, condenser, and evaporator to keep food cool.
  • Washing machines; combine water, detergent, and mechanical agitation to clean clothes. They use electric motors to drive the drum and pumps to circulate water.
  •  Microwaves; generate microwave radiation to heat food quickly by causing water molecules in the food to vibrate and produce heat.
  • Vacuum cleaners; use an electric motor to create suction, which draws in dirt and debris from surfaces.
  • Electric kettles; use a heating element to convert electrical energy into heat, boiling water rapidly.
