Consumer awareness refers to the level of understanding and knowledge that individuals possess about their rights, responsibilities, and choices as consumers in the marketplace. It encompasses awareness of consumer rights, product information, safety concerns, ethical considerations, and available resources for redress.
The universal rights of consumers, as outlined by consumer rights activists and organizations such as the United Nations and consumer protection agencies, include:
- Right to Safety: The right to expect that products and services are safe for use and free from harm.
- Right to Information: The right to access accurate, transparent, and understandable information about products and services.
- Right to Choice: The right to a variety of options and alternatives in the marketplace, without coercion or manipulation.
- Right to Redress: The right to seek compensation or resolution for unsatisfactory products or services.
- Right to Representation: The right to organize and advocate for consumer interests through collective action and consumer organizations.
