a) The falcon's method of attack is to drive away the raven by hunting it down and attempting to strike it with a death blow.

(b) The raven's method of defense is to fly unconcernedly to and fro, and only turn over sideways to present a remarkable wedge of beak at the last split second of the falcon's attack. This wedge of beak can transfix the falcon, and the falcon knows this, so it does not strike an adult raven.
