Question on: SS1 Physics - Sound And Waves
Describe the process of refraction of sound waves. Provide an example and discuss the factors that influence the extent of sound wave bending during refraction.
Refraction of sound waves occurs when sound travels from one medium to another with different properties, such as from air to water. During refraction, the speed and direction of the sound waves change due to the change in the medium.
For example, when sound travels from air to water, it bends towards the normal because sound travels faster in water than in air. Factors that influence the extent of sound wave bending during refraction include the angle of incidence, the density and temperature of the media, and the speed of sound in each medium. The greater the difference in these factors between the two media, the greater the bending of the sound waves.
