Explain the concept of overgrazing and its impact on rangelands.
Overgrazing is a situation where too many livestock animals are allowed to graze on rangeland for an extended period without giving vegetation enough time to recover. This excessive grazing can lead to several negative impacts on rangelands. It results in the depletion of plant cover and reduces the diversity of plant species, making the ecosystem less resilient to environmental changes. Overgrazing can also lead to soil erosion, as the protective vegetation cover is diminished, leaving the soil exposed to wind and water erosion. This process ultimately degrades the quality of the rangeland, making it less suitable for livestock grazing and other land uses.
