  1. Synthesis reaction (Combination reaction): Synthesis reactions involve the combination of two or more substances to form a single compound. The general form of a synthesis reaction is A + B → AB, where A and B are reactants, and AB is the product. Examples include:

 

-       Formation of water: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O

-       Formation of calcium carbonate: CaO + CO₂ → CaCO₃

 

Synthesis reactions are significant as they are fundamental to the formation of new compounds, allowing the creation of complex substances from simpler ones.

 

  1. Decomposition reaction: Decomposition reactions involve the breakdown of a compound into two or more simpler substances. The general form of a decomposition reaction is AB → A + B, where AB is the reactant compound, and A and B are the products. Examples include:

 

-       Decomposition of water: 2H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂

-       Decomposition of hydrogen peroxide: 2H₂O₂ → 2H₂O + O₂

 

Decomposition reactions are important as they contribute to the breakdown and recycling of substances in nature and play a role in various chemical processes.

 

  1. Combustion reaction: Combustion reactions involve the rapid combination of a substance with oxygen, resulting in the release of energy in the form of heat and light. The general form of a combustion reaction is Fuel + Oxygen → Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy. Examples include:

 

-       Combustion of methane: CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O

-       Combustion of gasoline: C₈H₁₈ + 12.5O₂ → 8CO₂ + 9H₂O

Combustion reactions are significant as they are a major source of energy, such as in burning fuels for heat generation and powering engines.

 

  1. Displacement reaction (Single and Double displacement): Displacement reactions involve the replacement of one element or group in a compound by another element or group. There are two types of displacement reactions:

 

-       Single displacement reaction: A single element displaces another element in a compound. The general form is A + BC → AC + B. Example:

 

-       Displacement of copper by zinc: Zn + CuSO₄ → ZnSO₄ + Cu

 

-       Double displacement reaction: Two compounds exchange ions or groups to form new compounds. The general form is AB + CD → AD + CB. Example:

 

-       Precipitation reaction: AgNO₃ + NaCl → AgCl + NaNO₃

 

Displacement reactions are significant as they are involved in various chemical processes, such as metal extraction, redox reactions, and precipitation reactions.
