In Buchi Emecheta's Second Class Citizen, Adah develops a strong admiration, even an obsession, for a well-groomed woman she observes at the hospital. This woman's life appears idyllic, thanks to her affectionate and devoted husband – a stark contrast to Adah's own difficult marriage to Francis. The woman receives a constant stream of gifts, including flowers, musical dolls, and elegant boxes "that contained all sorts of things" (pg. 124). Adah, witnessing this display of affection, finds it hard to believe that such a life could actually exist for someone (p. 125).
