If sqrt x 2 9 x 1 solve for x - JAMB Mathematics 1993 Question
If \(\sqrt{x^2 + 9}\) = x + 1, solve for x
A
5
B
4
C
3
D
2
correct option: b
\(\sqrt{x^2 + 9}\) = x + 1
x2 + 9 = (x + 1)2 + 1
0 = x2 + 2x + 1 - x2 - 9
= 2x - 8 = 0
2(x - 4) = 0
x = 4
x2 + 9 = (x + 1)2 + 1
0 = x2 + 2x + 1 - x2 - 9
= 2x - 8 = 0
2(x - 4) = 0
x = 4
