Termites are known to adopt swarming as an adaptation to overcome overcrowding in their colonies. When a termite colony becomes overcrowded, winged reproductive individuals (alates) are produced. These alates swarm, leave the original colony, and establish new colonies, thus alleviating the overcrowding.
