Nitrobacter is a chemoautotrophic organism found in soil and water responsible for the oxidation of ammonium to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. 

Nitrifying bacteria are chemolithotrophic organisms that include species of the genera Nitrosomonas, Nitrosococcus, Nitrobacter and Nitrococcus. These bacteria get their energy by the oxidation of inorganic nitrogen compounds. Types include ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria.
