Importance of water purification - JSS1 Physical and Health Education Lesson Note

Water purification is important for several reasons:

1. Health protection: Water purification removes harmful contaminants and poisons such as bacteria, viruses, chemicals, and heavy metals, all of which can cause diseases and health problems if consumed.

2. Safe drinking water: Clean and filtered water is necessary for drinking, cooking, and hygiene, as well as to prevent waterborne infections.

3. Environmental protection: Water purification helps to safeguard the environment by reducing pollution and contamination in water sources, which can harm aquatic life and ecosystems.

4. Economic benefits: Having access to clean and safe water can save money on healthcare costs related with waterborne diseases while also increasing productivity and well-being.

5. Emergency preparedness: In the event of a natural disaster or contamination incident, water purification is critical to ensuring the availability of safe drinking water.

To practically demonstrate water purification, an experiment can be conducted using these methods. Students can set up stations for boiling, filtration, chlorination, and UV disinfection to purify water samples collected from various sources. By observing the changes in water quality after treatment, students can learn about the effectiveness of different purification methods and gain practical knowledge about ensuring safe and clean drinking water. Additionally, the importance of water purification in preventing Airborne diseases and protecting the environment can be emphasized during this practical demonstration.
