Noun phrase - SS2 English Lesson Note
What is a noun phrase?
A noun phrase is a group of words that functions as a noun. It can consist of a single noun, or it can be more complex, with modifiers (adjectives, adverbs, etc.) and other phrases.
Positions of noun phrases
Noun phrases can be found in different positions in a sentence. They can be the subject of the sentence, the object of the verb, the object of a preposition, or the complement of a verb.
Functions of noun phrases
The function of a noun phrase depends on its position in the sentence.
- Subject: The subject of a sentence is the person or thing that the sentence is about. The subject of a sentence is always a noun phrase. For example, in the sentence "The cat sat on the mat," the noun phrase "The cat" is the subject of the sentence.
- Object: The object of a verb is the person or thing that the verb acts upon. The object of a verb can be a noun phrase, a pronoun, or a clause. For example, in the sentence "I saw the cat," the noun phrase "the cat" is the object of the verb "saw."
- Object of a preposition: The object of a preposition is the person or thing that the preposition refers to. The object of a preposition can be a noun phrase, a pronoun, or a clause. For example, in the sentence "The cat is under the mat," the noun phrase "the mat" is the object of the preposition "under."
- Complement: A complement is a word or phrase that follows a verb and completes its meaning. The complement of a verb can be a noun phrase, an adjective, or an adverb. For example, in the sentence "The cat is a furry creature," the noun phrase "a furry creature" is the complement of the verb "is."

Tips for identifying noun phrases
Noun phrases can be identified by their function in the sentence. If a word or phrase functions as a noun, then it is a noun phrase. Noun phrases can also be identified by their structure. They often contain a noun, but they can also contain modifiers (adjectives, adverbs, etc.) and other phrases.
