Cultural practices
Cultural practices refers to the way a group of people do things. Different groups have different cultures. A culture is passed on to the next generation through learning it. Culture is essential for the survival of any generation.
In Nigeria for example, the conduct of traditional marriage differs from one ethnic group expects the groom to bring a dog or a goat to the bride’s family to seek the hand of their daughter in marriage. These practices vary from one place to another.
Yoruba culture for example brings ‘dowry’ to the bride's family. What is ‘’dowry’’? It is an amount of money brought on the engagement day to the bride’s family. This gift is a cultural practice symbolising the fulfilment of traditional rites on the bride. The engagement day is a day agreed on by both families to formalise their union. This ceremony announces the bride as the sole property of the groom. No man is allowed to perform such a rite on the lady again.
Many cultural practices abound in our society. These are handed down from generation to generation for continuity.
