Problems of Agriculture In Nigeria - SS2 Economics Lesson Note

Agriculture in Nigeria faces a number of challenges that can be broadly categorized into five main areas:

  • Lack of infrastructure: The agricultural sector in Nigeria lacks adequate infrastructure such as roads, storage facilities, and irrigation systems. This makes it difficult for farmers to transport their crops to market, store them properly, and ensure adequate water supply for their crops.

  • Low productivity: Many farmers in Nigeria still rely on traditional farming methods that are inefficient and result in low yields. This is often due to a lack of access to modern farming techniques, fertilizers, and quality seeds.

  • Climate change: Climate change is having a significant impact on agriculture in Nigeria, with changes in rainfall patterns and temperatures affecting crop yields and leading to soil degradation.

  • Inadequate government support: The Nigerian government has not invested enough in agriculture to support farmers, improve infrastructure, and provide access to financing and other resources.

  • Security challenges: The security challenges in Nigeria, including insurgent attacks and conflicts between farmers and herders, have made it difficult for farmers to access their farmland and market their produce. This has resulted in loss of livelihoods and food insecurity in many areas.
