Types of Machines: Simple and Complex - JSS2 Basic technology Lesson Note
Simple Machines: Simple machines are basic mechanical devices that change the direction or magnitude of a force. They are the building blocks of more complex machines. There are six types of simple machines:
- Lever: A rigid bar pivoted on a fulcrum to lift or move loads.
- Inclined Plane: A flat surface tilted at an angle to help move heavy objects up or down.
- Wheel and Axle: A larger wheel attached to a smaller axle so that both rotate together to amplify force.
- Pulley: A wheel with a groove for a rope or cable to lift or move loads.
- Screw: An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder or cone to hold objects together or lift materials.
- Wedge: A device that is thick at one end and tapers to a thin edge, used to split or cut objects.
Complex Machines: Complex machines, also known as compound machines, are composed of two or more simple machines working together to facilitate work. Examples include bicycles, cars, and cranes. These machines combine the advantages of simple machines to perform more complicated tasks efficiently.
