Home economics is defined as a subject concerned with human development, personal and family finance, consumer issues, housing and interior design, nutrition and food preparation, as well as textile and apparel. It can be defined as a field concerned with improving family life. It does this by; 

• It finds out the needs of individuals and families.
• It looks for ways of meeting individual and families.
• It prepares people for family living and employments. 

1. Food and nutrition: This deals with the study of foods and the nutrients it gives to the body.
2. Clothing and textile: It deals with the designing and sewing of clothes. It also includes wise selection of clothes, personal hygiene and good grooming.  
3. Home management: This deals with processes of using those things which the family has or needs to obtain the things needed by the family e.g money, time, energy, etc. 
4. Consumer education: It teaches people/individual how to make wise decisions in selecting or buying goods and services.

2. It teaches families the different nutritional needs of family members.
3. It teaches family planning and proper upbringing of children.
4. It aims at improving family life.

Home economics reduces unemployment in the society because it creates job opportunities. 

It reduces poverty in the nation because it teaches people to work hard. 

It helps to promote health of citizens through consumer education.

It promotes food security because it involves food protection, processing and conservation.

 Home Economics is concerned with improving family life. It does this by;
