Persecution is an act of treating people in a cruel and unfair way especially because of their religion, race or political beliefs. 

1. The religious and political leaders in Jerusalem did not want to lose their reputation and relevance in the society.

Explanation: In some countries, Christians face severe persecution due to religious intolerance. This can include harassment, imprisonment, or even violence simply because of their faith. For example, in some parts of the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, Christians may be arrested for holding church services or sharing their faith.
