The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the suspension of Law admissions in eight Nigerian universities. This decision follows regulatory violations identified by the Council of Legal Education (CLE), which oversees legal education in the country.
Affected Universities
JAMB's suspension applies to the following universities:
- Kwara State University, Malete
- Bingham University, Karu
- Redeemer’s University, Ede
- Western Delta University, Oghara
- Taraba State University, Jalingo
- Arthur Jarvis University, Akpabuyo
- Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike
- Nigerian Police Academy, Wudil
These institutions will not be allowed to admit new students into their Law faculties for the upcoming academic session.
Why Were These Universities Sanctioned?
According to JAMB's Public Communications Advisor, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the affected universities failed to meet regulatory standards set by the CLE. The CLE, responsible for ensuring quality legal education in Nigeria, identified compliance issues that led to the suspension.
Special Case: Nigerian Police Academy
Among the suspended institutions, the Nigerian Police Academy, Wudil, faces an extended sanction. Its Law programme is suspended for two academic sessions: 2025/2026 and 2026/2027.
Implications for Prospective Law Students
The suspension means that:
- Students who planned to apply for Law in these universities must consider alternative institutions.
- JAMB will not approve any admissions for Law in these universities for the 2025/2026 academic session.
- The affected institutions will need to address regulatory concerns before regaining accreditation for their Law programmes.
The Need for Regulatory Compliance
This decision underscores the importance of regulatory compliance in Nigerian higher education. Law, as a highly regulated field, requires institutions to meet strict educational and professional standards. The CLE's intervention highlights ongoing concerns about quality assurance in legal education.
Prospective students are advised to verify accreditation status before applying to any Law programme in Nigeria.
