Basic javelin skills - JSS2 Physical and health education Lesson Note

Grip: The way you hold the javelin is crucial. Grip it firmly but not too tight. Most throwers use a "javelin grip," which involves holding the javelin with the index finger and thumb at the center of gravity. The other fingers wrap around the shaft for stability.

Carriage: This refers to how you position the javelin before starting your run-up. Hold the javelin upright, with the tip pointing slightly downward and the throwing hand near your ear. The non-throwing arm should be extended forward for balance.

Run-Up: The run-up is your approach to the throwing area. Start with a controlled jog or walk, gradually increasing speed as you approach the throwing line. The goal is to build momentum without sacrificing balance or technique.

Release: As you reach the end of your run-up, transfer your weight from your back foot to your front foot and plant it firmly. Your throwing arm should extend fully, releasing the javelin at the right moment. The tip of the javelin should point upward as it leaves your hand, allowing it to fly smoothly through the air.

Follow Through: After releasing the javelin, your throwing arm should continue its motion in the direction of the throw. This helps maintain momentum and ensures a smooth release. Your body should also continue moving forward, with the non-throwing arm swinging back to help balance.

Recovery: Once you've released the javelin and completed your follow-through, it's important to maintain your balance and control. Take a few steps forward to prevent stepping over the throwing line or losing your balance. Then, retrieve your javelin and prepare for your next throw.

Remember, mastering these basic skills takes time and practice. Focus on each aspect individually, gradually building up to full throws, and don't be afraid to seek guidance from coaches or experienced throwers.
