Grammar : Adjectives - JSS2 English language Lesson Note

An adjective is a word that qualifies, describes, or tells us more about a noun. Adjectives are known as describing words. Adjectives are a vital part of speech in English language. For instance, the big house, the white board, the tall boy, the heavy box, the beautiful girl, the kind and gentle person, the plump woman, two pencils, the round, smooth, and sharp tusk, the useful advice, etc.

Mr Ade is a friendly and considerate person.
He lives in a modern glass house.
In the above sentences, the underlined words are adjectives. They describe or add meaning to the noun.

TYPES OF ADJECTIVE
Adjective of Quality:
These adjectives describe, i.e., they tell us “what sort”. For instance,

She is a clever lady.
I have a sleek black dog.
That is a tedious journey.
Adjective of Quantity:
It indicates how much or how many. For instance,

There are ten colorful bottles on the table.
She has ample money.
He has numerous friends at school.
Possessive Adjective:
It indicates a person's ownership of a property or thing.

Timi is walking with his caring mother.
Our brave army will defeat yours.
These are his cherished keys.
Adjective of Nationality:
It signifies a person’s race.

The Nigerian sprinter won the race.
Some Japanese tourists visited yesterday.
The Indian student in my class excelled in English.


Demonstrative Adjective:
This shows the distance or number of nouns, whether singular or plural

This special pen belongs to me.
That ancient castle on the mountain was built by Lord Hassier.
These colorful books on the table are mine.
I warned those mischievous boys not to climb the tree.


Interrogative Adjective:
They are used with nouns to ask questions.

What interesting book are you reading now?
Whose grand house is that?
Which talented boy can answer this question?
