Consonant sounds are speech sounds produced when the organs of speech experience contacts between themselves.
Types of Consonants: English has 24 consonant sounds. Some consonants have voice from the voicebox and some don’t. These consonants are voiced and voiceless pairs.
Voiced and Voiceless Pairs: /p/ /b/, /t/ /d/, /k/ /g/, /f/ /v/, /s/ /z/, /θ/ /ð/, /ʃ/ /ʒ/, /ʈʃ/ /dʒ/.
Voiced Consonants: /h/, /w/, /n/, /m/, /r/, /j/, /ŋ/, /l/.
Voiced and Voiceless Pairs:
- /p/ /b/: 'pat' and 'bat'
- /t/ /d/: 'tap' and 'dap'
- /k/ /g/: 'cat' and 'gag'
- /f/ /v/: 'fan' and 'van'
- /s/ /z/: 'sip' and 'zip'
- /θ/ /ð/: 'thin' and 'this'
- /ʃ/ /ʒ/: 'sheep' and 'measure'
- /ʈʃ/ /dʒ/: 'chop' and 'jog'
