What is gender equality?

Gender equality refers to condition where both men and women living in the society enjoy the same rights and opportunities across all sectors of the society.

The equal rights and opportunities cuts across different sectors and different aspects of our lives, including decision-making and economic participation.

This means that needs of women and men are equally valued and favoured and there should not be bias because of a person's gender.

How to achieve gender equality in Nigeria

To achieve and maintain gender equality the society needs to embrace gender neutrality and maintain gender equity.

As WikiPedia puts it:

"Gender equality is the goal, while gender neutrality and gender equity are practices and ways of thinking that help in achieving the goal. Gender parity, which is used to measure gender balance in a given situation, can aid in achieving gender equality but is not the goal in and of itself. Gender equality is more than equal representation, it is strongly tied to women's rights, and often requires policy changes."

How can we tell if Nigeria maintain gender equality?

One of the ways we can measure gender equality in the country by looking at the representation of men and of women in a range of roles. A situation where (for example) women are hardly represented in a sector of the society then we can begin to ask questions "why"? Could it be that women are not allowed equal opportunities in that sector? However, this does not imply that men and women must be equally represented in everything in the society. Giving equal opportunities, there are things in life where women may thrive more than men, and vice versa. We can also look at the Nigerian constitution if certain laws is biased against men or women in the society.
